"During my PhD, which I defended in 2025, and which was supported by the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship, I explored amphiphilic glycopolymers derived from polysaccharides as next-generation nanocarriers for drug delivery. While PEG-based nanovectors dominate current clinical applications, their limitations have recently raised concerns. My project focused on chitosan derivatives, a bio-based, biodegradable, and positively charged polysaccharide with intrinsic bioactivities relevant to tissue engineering and gene/drug delivery.
By combining chitosan with hydrophobic blocks, I aimed to generate amphiphilic glycopolymers able to self-assemble in water into advanced morphologies (such as vesicles). Unlike traditional solid nanoparticles, these vesicular nanostructures can encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds simultaneously. In addition, I introduced light-responsive functionalities, enabling external control over drug release. This strategy opens new perspectives for smart nanocarriers in nanomedicine."
